A number of people were trapped inside the house of the army official who had collapsed during rescue attempts, according to a statement from the army, which confirmed four casualties.

The quake rattled Guatemala City’s central business district of Sesoquimá, near a church, and sent people running for cover and away, prompting many businesses to close. Residents streamed into a hotel in the village. Some walked with the dead in their arms.

The Associated Press reported some of those killed could have been security officers.

The quake followed a magnitude 7.0 earthquake which killed at least 6,600 people in Guatemala earlier this year, and hundreds died during the disaster caused by the quake.
